1. Why are you interested in serving on the Iowa
Association of County Extension Councils’ Board of Directors?
The IACEC Board serves as an important link for
Extension Councils, ISU, and Legislators. The success of future Extension
programming is contingent upon the combined commitments of these entities to
research, fund, and implement programming that fills a need for the
communities served. As the needs of our communities change, so too will the
needs of the University in providing appropriate research and education, as
well the need for legislators to provide direction and funding adequate to
fulfill the expectations of their constituents. I have enjoyed my association
with IACEC as a county liaison and look forward to continuing that mission as
a Director.
2. What contributions do you feel you could make to
this association?
I have a degree in Agricultural Education from ISU as
well as 20 years of business experience in agriculture and lending. My six
year term on the Emmet County Extension Council comes with 4 years as Chairman
and two as IACEC liaison. I believe in investing in our communities and have
served as a city ambassador, 4-H leader, fair volunteer, and various school
committees – most recently as finance committee chairman for our successful
local school bond issue. I hope that these experiences along with ten years
as an Ag Lender will be useful in supporting the needs of the IACEC Board.
3. What types of experiences you have had on your
extension council?
As a 4 year council chair, I have been involved in many
activities of the council. I have taken an active role in the budget process,
have represented our county and many legislative events and have spoken at our
local Friends of Extension community meetings in support of
Extension/Community relationships. I have volunteered for numerous committee
assignments for extension and 4-H.
4. Please tell us briefly about yourself.
My wife Deb were both born and raised on farms near
Estherville, and now have two sons age 16 and 12 who are active 4-H members.
Since graduation from ISU in Agricultural Education in 1988, I have worked in
Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska in agriculture ventures including grain elevator
management, farm marketing consulting, farming, and 10 years in ag lending,
currently with NorthStar Bank in Estherville. I am an avid supporter of both
education and extension in our community and hope to bring those experiences
to the IACEC Board for Northwest Iowa.

1. Why are
you interested in serving on the Iowa Association of County Extension
Councils’ Board of Directors?
I am interested in serving on the Iowa Association of
County Extension Councils’ Board of Directors because I can make a difference
in meeting the needs of rural and urban Iowans. I am excited to be a part of
this organization and implementation of its goals.
2. What
contributions do you feel you could make to this association?
I bring experience in public service & communication of
coordination between various rural and urban entities. I bring fresh ideas to
help shape the role of Extension now and in the future.
3.What types
of experiences you have had on your extension council?
I have served as president of the Woodbury County
Extension Council. In this capacity I have worked with many agencies. Most
recently, I helped develop the profile for our new County CEED. We are working
to put emphasis on areas that need greater exposure. One of these areas is
economic development opportunities for our smaller, rural communities.
4. Please
tell us briefly about yourself.
I am involved as co-owner and manager of Ullrich Farm
Corporation, concentration on production of soybeans, corn and hay. I have
raised swine and beef cattle. For the past thirty years my wife and I have
raised Registered Paint Horses. We will be shipping our first offspring sold
overseas to United Kingdom this month, which has proved exciting and
challenging. Recently I have become involved in contracting and land
development. Our acreage development, Sandhills Estates, is well underway. I
served as mayor of Sloan for four years and as a city councilman for eight
years. Growing up a 4-H’er, I now am involved with the Woodbury County Fair as
a department superintendent. I stay involved with my church as and usher and
greeter. Extension Council has kept me busy for the past three years as well
as being an elected candidate for Woodbury County Supervisor.
I am a member of the State Farm Bureau Equine
Committee. I am also a member of the newly formed committee to oversee the
construction, fund raising, and management of the Tri-State Equine Show Area
in Moville, Iowa. I have two children. Holly is a dental hygienist. Tony is
a senior at Westwood High School. My wife Roxie is a special ed teacher for
Sioux City School and an elected school board member for Westwood High School.

1. Why are you interested in serving on the Iowa
Association of County Extension Councils’ Board of Directors?
Because I want to offer my services to an organization that I have had
the opportunity to be involved in and committed to in one capacity or another
for a large number of years.
2. What contributions do you feel you could make to
this association?
I feel that my life experiences with my
involvement in business, community and organizations give me the background
necessary to provide leadership and superior decision-making to the
organization. I have owned and managed a restaurant, abstract company and a
cow/farming operation. I have impeccable listening skills and I work very
well with other people. I always have a strong desire to learn everything I
can about the things I am involved in so that I might better serve that
venture.
3. What types of experiences you have had on your
extension council?
I have only served a brief term with the Crawford
County Extension Council, but I have had the opportunity to serve on several
committees to help with the growth and maintenance of the county organization
and office. I have a stellar attendance record and have tried to participate
in regional meetings when possible. I am still struggling to learn all of the
acronyms involved with this position but I am sure that with time I will have
them perfected.
4. Please tell us briefly about yourself.
I am the mother of two – Hayley, 17 and Spencer,
19. My husband, Brad, is an attorney. I currently work full-time operating
and managing our purebred cattle and farming operation. I am very passionate
about the livestock industry and am strongly involved in the Iowa Maine-Anjou
Association. Brad currently serves on the Iowa Maine Board and I am heading
the public relations and advertising committee and help to maintain the
website and write and circulate our newsletters.
I have been active in several community
organizations including serving many years on the Crawford County Fair Board
and Crawford County Cattlemen’s Association. I have strong upbringing in 4-H
and FFA which I feel helped to create great leadership skills.
I own and operated a fine dining restaurant for a
number of years and also managed a land title company which we still currently
own. My life centers around my family and livestock operations and I
would like to offer my skills back to my community.
