1. Why are you interested in serving on the Iowa
Association of County Extension Councils’ Board of Directors?
I have been very active on the Van Buren County Extension Council.
I have served as a liaison from our council to the Southeast Area Council/IACEC
for 3 years. I have attended 2 meetings each year as the council liaison.
I have
attended the ISU Extension Futuring Presentation at the Neal Smith Nature
Center. I attended the Southeast Iowa Extension Forum for newly elected
legislators in the fall of 2002. I have attended the Governor’s hearing in
Ottumwa (December 2003) on the Iowa budget. I attended the IACEC Legislative
Day in 2003 through 2007 and visited with our legislators. I attended an open
forum at Columbus Junction in February 2004 and spoke to Senator Charles
Grassley on behalf of Extension regarding decreased funding.
2. What contributions do you feel you could make to
this association?
I feel I am
good at communications. As a retiree, I have the time resource to attend
meetings and then bring back this information to my county extension council
and the Southeast IA County Extension Councils. I feel I have the ability to
share concerns from the grassroots level up to the University level. I have a
good perspective on the needs and concerns of County Extension Councils. I
would like the opportunity to visit with other Council members across the
state and become more pro-active with issues that will benefit ISU Extension.
We need to be constantly alert to the changing needs of Iowa Citizens and how
ISU Extension can inform, educate and assist Iowa citizens to meet these
challenges in a positive manner.
3. What types of experiences you have had on your
extension council?
I am serving
my seventh year on the Van Buren County Extension Council. Other leadership
experiences include serving as Chair for the Citizens for Extension Referendum
Committee in 2002. I have served as 4-H Livestock Judging Team coach for 7
years, and have continued for 11 years serving as agriculture and natural
resources judge and ultrasound contest superintendent at the county fair.
I have served
6 years as Van Buren County Livestock Quiz Bowl coach, winning third place in
the state competition in 2001, first in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006 and second
in 2003. The past 5 years our team has participated in the Regional Quiz Bowl
Competition at the AK-SAR-BEN Livestock Exposition. I have assisted with the
4-H/FFA sheep, beef, and swine weigh-ins for Van Buren County for 11 years. I
have chaperoned a Southeast Iowa Intermediate trip to Minneapolis, MN in 2002.
I was a part
of the Iowa Legislative Recognition on the Floor or the House of
Representatives when they read the proclamation of the 100th Anniversary of
ISU Extension. I was active with the Van Buren County/ISU Extension 100th
Anniversary Celebration and other 100th Anniversary community events.
4. Please tell us briefly about yourself.
I am a retired
Vocational Agriculture Instructor. I was the instructor at Spencer Community
Schools for 20 years, at Fox Valley Schools for 7 years, and other schools for
a total teaching career of 39 years.
Currently I am
representing Van Buren County on the SENECA Area Agency on Aging and serving
on the county and area board. I am chairperson of the Southeast Iowa Single
Group. I was very active in the Iowa State Education Association. I am a
life member and served as the Northwest Iowa Uniserve President. I served as
President of the Iowa Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association.
I was very
interested in promoting International Agriculture Studies and numerous trips
behind the Iron Curtain. In 1963, I provided leadership and took 31 FFA
students and chaperons on this 30-day trip. The trip traveled through 10
different European countries and spent 8 days in Communist countries.
I have
attended the Southeast Iowa Cow-Calf Conference each winter. I have attended
numerous field day tours at the Southeast Iowa Research Farm at
Crawfordsville. I am serving as a director on the Southeast IA Research Farm.
I was honored
in 2006 by the Van Buren County Farm Bureau as their recipient for the Salute
to Agriculture Award.

1. Why are
you interested in serving on the Iowa Association of County Extension Councils
Board of Directors?
I am interested in keeping extension programs going in
Iowa. I have personally benefited from being a part of extension and want to
make sure that our programs continue to reach others.
2. What
contributions do you feel you could make to this association?
I hope I will bring new ideas/view points to the group
with my experiences in Southwest Iowa and now in Clinton County.
3. What types
of experiences have you had on your extension council?
I have been a member of the Clinton County Extension
Council since January 2005. I have held the office of treasurer, and am part
of the personnel and finance committees. During my term, we have worked to
hire a new CYC in our county, while preparing to pass the much needed
referendum in November. We have a lot of work ahead of us!
4. Please
tell us briefly about yourself.
I grew up on a farm in Southwest Iowa, and was an active
4-H member in Taylor County. I am a graduate of ISU with a degree in Ag
Business and Agronomy. After graduation, I moved to DeWitt in Clinton County
to work as an Ag loan officer for DeWitt Bank & Trust Co, and have worked here
for 5 years now. I met my husband Wayne here and we were married in November
2004. We settled in to farm row crop, raise feeder calves and custom farrow
sows. I enjoy helping out on the farm, cooking, gardening and spending time
with family and friends.

1. Why are you
interested in serving on the Iowa Association of County Extension Councils’
Board of Directors?
In my short time as an
Extension Council member, I have learned the value and benefit that ISU
Extension has to offer community members. I am anxious to learn more and then
use this knowledge to make further contributions within our community.
2. What
contributions do you feel you could make to this association?
I would share my
professional career experiences as a leader of large and small organizations
with other board members. When asked to serve, I do so with a passion and
strong work ethic. I would approach my position as a board member as a team
player and contribute in any way asked.
In my professional
career, I have been a Chief Marketing Officer with retailers such as SAM’s
Club, Osco/Savon Drug Stores, Wild Oats Markets, and DICK’s Sporting Goods. I
have also had leadership positions in retail operations. These experiences
would enable me to make contributions in many different areas.
3. What types of
experiences you have had on your extension council?
As mentioned earlier,
I am new to the Extension Council. Therefore, each experience is new and I am
enjoying it immensely.
4. Please tell us
briefly about yourself.
My wife Debbie and I
have been married for almost 39 years. We have six children and five
grandchildren. I grew up on a farm in Eddyville, Iowa. My father
and brother still farm in Wapello County. In addition to being
President/CEO of Community 1st Credit Union, I am a member of the Finance
Committee for the Iowa Credit Union League and a board member of Community
Business Lenders. In my spare time, my wife and I have 24 head of
cattle. As the saying goes, you can take the boy off the farm, but you
can’t take the farm out of the boy!
