Insect Zoo Tour and Outreach

Detail how your county will market this program to inform potential participants.

- County libraries have given their commitment to help market this event as well as ongoing programming by promotion on website, newsletters, and on-site materials (i.e.  flyers, posters, and brochures).

- Muscatine County 4-H Clubs will be encouraged to attend the Insect Zoo exhibition and be asked to bring non 4-H member friends.  In addition, selected 4-H members and volunteers will be asked to assist in providing portions of the summer programming around entomology project areas and will be offered citizenship opportunities.

- Special invitation and encouragement to new Muscatine County club which has evolved from The Flickinger Center with the goal to promote new membership and growth.

- Invitations to other community partners, Homeschool Assistance Program, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and others.

- Joint press releases to local media from Muscatine County Extension and library partners.

Describe the new clientele that this program is intended to reach.  How does your council envision this program will interest this clientele?

Many of the participants in the library's summer reading programs are non-farm, low-income, and minority youth.  Exposure to this type of educational experience is hoped to excite and provide insight into career exploration, post-secondary education at ISU, and continued interest in joining 4-H for ongoing experiential opportunities that these youth may not otherwise receive.  Parents will also be invited to attend Insect Zoo activities, so this will be an opportunity to educate and inform parents as to the benefits of 4-H, educational opportunities presented by ISU, and the need for volunteer 4-H leaders.

How does your council plan to utilize the mini grant?

The $500 will be used to offset costs of bringing the Insect Zoo to the three county libraries:  West Liberty, Wilton, and Muscatine.  These costs include mileage, fee for exhibition, and potential lodging.
