Plazas Comunitarias in Columbus Junction

List date(s) and time(s) program will be presented:

Ongoing program to being in Spring of 2008 and continue weeknights at Columbus Elementary School Computer Lab

Detail how your county will market this program to inform potential participants.

We will use the Community Development Center and Civic Society (both bi-lingual programs in that community) to help us publicize this partnership between ISU Extension, the Mexican Consulate and the Columbus Community School District.  We will also use the Hispanic newspapers as well as fliers going home with students at the school.

Describe the new clientele that this program is intended to reach.  How does your council envision this program will interest this clientele?

This program is to be used exclusively to reach the Hispanic residents in our County.  We have the highest percentage of Hispanics in Iowa, per capita, but have had minimum impact with our programming on this population.  We intend to use this adult learning program that has been developed by the Mexican Government and is being used in 32 other states across the country to assist the new residents in our community and introduce them to the valuable resources of ISU Extension.  A “Plaza” is a learning community that enables adults to expand their skills in math and science as well as their language skills.  This enables them to be more valuable in the workforce, gives them a deeper appreciation for their children’s efforts at school and enables them to be more active in their children’s education.

How does your council plan to utilize the mini grant?

This mini-grant would be used for reading and writing materials that would be used in the adult classroom including pens, pencils, writing paper and a series of reading books of all levels in both Spanish and English.  The council is currently undertaking the process of being the pilot county for “Plazas” in Iowa, this will provide the first step in getting there.
