Telling the Story – Multicultural Family Center

Detail how your county will market this program to inform potential participants.

Dubuque County Extension has many successful programs, but needs to develop a consistent marketing approach which will lead to more community exposure. The Multicultural Family Center is serving Dubuque County residents and will be used as a model to describe just one of the successful Extension stories.  This will serve as a beginning for marketing other Dubuque Extension programs such as Master Gardeners, First Time Homebuyers, Financial Counseling, Partners in Learning AmeriCorps, and Generations in Workforce to name a few examples.

Describe the new clientele that this program is intended to reach.  How does your council envision this program will interest this clientele?

Dubuque County Extension needs to develop a new marketing approach and the Multicultural Family Center is serving an important clientele and need, but many residents don’t understand that it is open to everyone, providing language classes, youth programs, computer access etc. Marketing tools are needed to tell the story.  Service clubs and organizations such as Rotary, Kiwanis, etc. have a majority of their members in the age group of 40 to 60.  These clubs and organizations have community leaders who would benefit from an on-site program in conjunction with a brochure.  Younger 20 to 40 year olds are more adapt at using the internet and would more likely use that technology to get information about Extension educational programs. Both age groups are vital to the future of Dubuque Extension, therefore we feel these new marketing tools are needed to reach Dubuque County citizens.

How does your council plan to utilize the mini grant?

Dubuque County Extension is one of six counties that have not passed the public measure, so we need to market our county Extension Services; but our support staff is extremely limited. These funds would be used to hire a college student to design and prepare the website power point  presentation and use graphic design knowledge to print the brochure.  It is our intent that this could serve as a model for additional Dubuque County Extension programs such as 4-H, other summer programs and events all year long.
